Stereotyping sports

Three weeks ago, Canadian hockey broadcaster, Don Cherry, was fired after a racist rant. Just recently, a San Fransico 49ers broadcaster was also suspended for allegedly making a racial comment towards the Baltimore Ravens Quarterback. After Don Cherry’s firing, many people shared comments regarding who supports or plays these sports.

For example, Jessica Allen, a commentator on “The Social,” had a rant regarding the sport of hockey saying that hockey players “… all tended to be white boys that weren’t let’s say very nice, they were not generally thoughtful, and they were often bullies.”

My experience as a hockey player is the exact opposite. Whose opinion is correct? We clearly have different views, but neither of us is entitled to speak for an entire sport or its players, spectators, coaches and fans. Just like Don Cherry or the 49ers commentator doesn’t represent their sport.

Just because Don Cherry, Jessica Allen, the 49ers broadcaster (and me) have opinions doesn’t mean everyone connected with the sport feels the same way.
