Man taken into custody after SWAT standoff overnight Saturday in West Central

From staff reports

After a man threatened to stab multiple people in a West Central home on Saturday evening, he barricaded himself inside leading to an hourslong standoff with police.

Just before midnight Saturday evening, Spokane police officers responded to a domestic violence call on the 2400 block of West Mallon Avenue. Once on scene, officers learned that a man inside had threatened to stab multiple people with a knife including his significant other, according to a police statement.

Layth Fuller, 53, faces two counts of felony harassment and one count of first-degree assault.

Police evacuated the home leaving Fuller alone inside. The SWAT team, hostage negotiators, K9 officers, the explosives disposal unit and fire department were called to the scene.

Officers announced over a loud speaker that Fuller was under arrest and should surrender, but he instead barricaded himself inside the house, according to SPD.

At about 3:30 a.m. SWAT entered the home with a search warrant, and Fuller was taken into custody.

Fuller pleaded guilty to domestic violence harassment and obstructing a public servant in 2004. His first court appearance is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
