ELITE OF THE ELITE

By Charles Apple The Spokesman Review

What would it take for Gonzaga to join the elite men’s college basketball programs? Name recognition would help — you can’t buy publicity like the program received from Jimmy Kimmel’s ribbing last season. And more wins to dive deeper into the bracket each year would help, of course.

But a careful look at key stats below from eight elite college hoops programs shows that Gongaza stacks up pretty well in several categories. Perhaps all the program really needs is more time to rack up postseason successes — successes like the ones we’ve seen in recent years.

It’s all about those trophies

While not everyone can dominate the sport like John Wooden’s UCLA teams did in the 1960s and 1970s, the elite eight teams shown above have teamed up to win 45 national titles over the past 80 seasons — including 10 of the last 12 NCAA men’s basketball championships.
