Spokane Valley man killed, woman injured in head-on crash Friday night near Newport

A Spokane Valley man died Friday night and a woman was injured in a three-vehicle crash near Newport when he attempted to pass another car in a no-passing zone and collided head-on with a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

Jason R. Cunningham, 38, was driving a 2004 Subaru Impreza on U.S. Highway 2, five miles south of Newport, according to a Washington State Patrol news release. While attempting the pass, his car collided with a 2007 Saturn Outlook, driven by Sherri Bell, 44, of Newport. Bell was taken to the Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center. The hospital reported that she was in satisfactory condition Saturday morning.

Cunningham’s car was then pushed into the truck he was attempting to pass. The driver of the truck was uninjured.

According to the WSP, Cunningham was not wearing a seat belt at the time.

WSP said it is unknown if alcohol was involved in the crash.
