Man driving wrong way hits deputy’s car head-on in Spokane Valley; no serious injuries

A Spokane County sheriff’s sergeant and another driver were practically unharmed after a head-on collision early Monday in Spokane Valley.

A news release from the sheriff’s office said the crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Appleway Boulevard near Vista Road.

Sgt. Jerad Kiehn was driving east on Appleway – a one-way road – and an SUV traveling the wrong direction slammed into his patrol car before he could steer out of the way, the sheriff’s office said.

“Although both vehicles sustained severe damage, thankfully, neither driver was seriously injured,” the sheriff’s office said.

The driver of the SUV, Brent A. Glass, 46, did not appear intoxicated, but his license was suspended, the sheriff’s office said.

Glass was apologetic, telling deputies he was unfamiliar with the area and hadn’t realized Appleway was a one-way road, the sheriff’s office said.

Glass was charged with third-degree driving with a suspended license, a misdemeanor. He was also cited for second-degree negligent driving, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and driving without proof of insurance.

The sheriff’s office said Glass was given a ride to a friend’s home and released after receiving his tickets.

A Washington State Patrol trooper responded and completed a report on the crash.
