Winter storm wreaking havoc on high school sports

The winter storm covering the state of Washington is wreaking havoc on the high school sports schedule and impacting plans for regional and state tournaments.

According to Herb Rotchford, District 8/Greater Spokane League director, activities in the Spokane area for 4A and 3A Friday and Saturday have been postponed – including district basketball and gymnastics – with the exception of the 4A wrestling regional at Camas HS, which was condensed to a one-day tournament Friday.

The basketball games originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday will be moved to Tuesday, with the play-in games previously scheduled for that day pushed to Wednesday.

The 4A and 3A district basketball championships next weekend at the Spokane Arena are on as scheduled.

The 3A district gymnastics qualifying meet scheduled for Friday has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m.

According to West Valley AD Jamie Nilles, all 2A, 1A and 2B tournament games in the area are on as scheduled and if a team can’t travel they will move individual games to Monday.

The Pasco school district at 11:43 a.m. on Friday canceled all activities there, including district basketball games involving Spokane-area schools. PSD had not announced a contingency plan at the time of this post. Kennewick canceled activities as well, with makeup dates unannounced.

The Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) on Friday morning canceled all boys and girls regional wrestling tournaments across the state in the best interest of safety and equal opportunity for all participants.

To address these cancellations, the WIAA staff and event managers are developing a 32-entry WIAA Mat Classic tournament that will begin on Friday, Feb. 15. The details of that schedule will be released on Monday, according to the WIAA news release.

The 4A regional at Camas HS today, which was supposed to be a two-day event, is still going on but activities will be condensed into one. They will wrestle to the quarterfinals today and send those eight wrestlers in each weight class to state.

This post was updated to indicate rescheduling of gmnastics meet.
