Kalispel Tribe to be honored for work in the Pend Oreille River watershed

From staff reports

Members of the Kalispel Tribe will be honored as “Watershed Heros” Friday night at the Winter Waters event at Patsy Clark Mansion.

The Sierra Club’s Upper Columbia River Group and the Center for Environmental Law and Policy will put on the event, which runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Cost is $35. The mansion is at 2208 W. Second Ave.

Winter Waters is held annually in Spokane to honor people who have made a significant contribution to protecting water for the common good.

The Kalispel Tribe will be honored for its stewardship of the Priest-Pend Oreille River watersheds, which are part of the tribe’s ancestral homeland.

The tribe has been involved in efforts to restore fisheries affected by dam building in the watersheds. Recently, the tribe has opposed the construction of a silicon smelter in the Newport area.

Tickets may be purchased at the door, but RSVPs are requested at john@waterplanet.ws.
