Jake McGrew scores twice as Chiefs double up Kootenay

CRANBROOK, British Columbia – Jake McGrew scored twice, giving him goals in four consecutive games and 16 on the season, as the Spokane Chiefs raced to a 5-1 lead after two periods Saturday night and eased past the Kootenay Ice 8-4 in Western Hockey League action at Western Financial Place.

Ty Smith contributed four assists – one short of his career high – Jaret Anderson-Dolan, Luc Smith and Luke Toporowski each had a goal and assist, and Bailey Brkin stopped 33 of 37 shots as Spokane improved to 4-0 against Kootenay this season.

Noah King, Ethan McIndoe and Graham Sward scored the Chiefs’ other goals – it was Sward’s first of the season – and Eli Zummack added two assists. Payton Krebs had a goal and assist for the Ice.

The Chiefs (22-13-2-2, 48 points), trail second-place Portland by three points in the WHL’s U.S. Division. Spokane kicks off a four-game homestand Wednesday night at 7:05 against Prince George.
