Area roundup: Sasquatch men, women post wins over Yaks

Isaiah Gotell scored 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds and Dedrick Pakootas and Asher Cox scored 20 apiece to power the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch men to an 87-77 victory over the Yakima Valley Yaks in Northwest Athletic Conference play in Yakima on Wednesday.

Garrett White and JR Delgado both scored 10 for CC Spokane (12-4, 3-0), which jumped out to a 19-3 lead but led just 38-34 at halftime. The Yaks (3-12, 0-3) pulled within 56-55 with 10:35 left to play, but Pakootas had a layup and two free throws and Gotell and Cox hit back-to-back 3-pointers in a 10-0 run and the Sasquatch stayed in front from there.

CC Spokane shot 51.5 percent from the floor and made 11 of 24 from distance (46 percent). The Yaks made just 28 of 75 shots (37 percent) and shot 28 percent from beyond the arc.

Women’s basketball

CC Spokane 66, Yakima Valley 59: Koyama Young scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, Shania Graham added 16 points and the Sasquatch (12-3, 1-2) stormed back in the second half to beat the Yaks (9-6, 0-3) in Yakima.

The Sasquatch, who trailed 33-26 at halftime, got back-to-back 3-pointers from Graham and one from Young to pull even at 37 with 5:52 left in the third quarter. Young buried a 3, Lachelle Bearcub hit a jumper and Alexia Novelli made two free throws in a 7-0 spurt that left the Sasquatch on top 50-43 after three periods.

The Yaks used a 14-3 run to grab a 57-53 lead. The game was tied at 59 when Novelli and Bearcub sank jumpers and Young hit a 3 in a game-ending 7-0 run.

Novelli had 12 points and nine rebounds, while Bearcub scored 12 for CCS.
