Two more social media threats cap ‘challenging week’ at Shadle Park High

A “very challenging week” at Shadle Park High School ended Friday with Spokane police dealing with two more social media threats and identifying those responsible.

Two more threats surfaced late Thursday night, according to Spokane Public Schools spokesman Brian Coddington.

After spending the night investigating the threats, police conducted more interviews Friday.

“The process has identified those who are responsible for initiating those threats or contributing in a significant way to distributing those threats,” Coddington added.

Friday also was the third day of heightened presence by police and resource officers. Attendance was about half of normal partly becauseFriday was an early release day ahead of a three-day weekend.

“It has been a very challenging week for staff and students, and they’ve handled it really well,” Coddington said. “They’ve been focused on learning and supporting each other.”

The threats were the second and third following the arrest of a Shadle Park sophomore after he threatened to shoot up the school, police said.

Wednesday’s incident began at about 10 a.m. with a 911 call.

The caller, who was not a student and learned about the incident through social media, reported that a male student said in a classroom he had a gun in his backpack and threatened to shoot up the school, according to police.

The suspect, a juvenile, had no gun. He was arrested and booked into the Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center on suspicion of felony harassment.

That night, a social media threat referenced Wednesday’s incident and also gave the first name of the suspect arrested on Wednesday: “Tomorrow @Shadle I am going to finish what … didn’t. I will shoot up Shadle tomorrow and students will die!! Look out.”
