GSL girls: Central Valley defends home court, knocks off previously undefeated Mt. Spokane

The Central Valley girls picked a good time to play one of their better games of the season. Mt. Spokane picked a bad time to struggle.

Camryn Skaife scored 21 points, with five 3-pointers, and the host Bears (15-2, 10-1) beat the previously unbeaten Wildcats 68-45 in a Greater Spokane League showdown Tuesday.

Mady Simmelink added 13 points for CV; Emily Nelson led Mt. Spokane (16-1, 8-1) with 15 points.

CV hasn’t lost at home since December 2014 and the Bears, while a different team than the previous four years without the Hull twins and Hailey Christopher, are looking for their fourth consecutive league title.

“We’ve been told many times we’re going to lose every game without them,” Skaife said of her former teammates. “It feels good proving everybody wrong.”

Mt. Spokane’s Aspyn Adams, bound for Loyola Marymount in the fall, missed her first six 3-point attempts and was held without a basket until 4 1/2 minutes left.

“Everybody keys in on her,” Mt. Spokane coach David Pratt said of his leading scorer. “They did a really nice job of making it tough for her to get shots off.”

Mt. Spokane scored the first seven points, but Skaife hit a pair from beyond the 3-point arc, Simmelink added a 3 and CV led 17-12 after one quarter.

The lead reached 10 with 4:51 left in the half and Pratt asked for time out. It didn’t help, as CV scored the next five points, including a 3-pointer by Simmelink. CV led 37-20 at the intermission.

The Bears opened the third quarter on an 11-2 run, including another 3 from Skaife, her fourth of the game.

“They were just better than us today,” Pratt said. “They’re tough at home.”

Lewis and Clark 78, Rogers 14: Ella Damon scored 12 points, Anna Reeves added 11 and the Tigers (14-3, 9-2) defeated the visiting Pirates (0-16, 0-9).

Brooklyn Paul led Rogers with eight points.

University 77, Shadle Park 23: Ellie Boni scored 15 points, Kinsley Barrington had 14 and the visiting Titans (13-4, 8-3) defeated the Highlanders (1-16, 1-8).

Eva Leblanc led Shadle Park with nine points.

North Central 47, Gonzaga Prep 45: Kyara Sayers hit a 3-pointer as time expired and the Indians (10-7, 5-4) edged the visiting Bullpups (10-7, 5-6).

Sayers finished with nine points. Dakotah Chastain scored 15 points and Quincy McDeid added 12 for NC.

Leah Carney and Adelyn Derzay scored 11 points apiece for G-Prep.

Mead 70, Ferris 38: Alicia Suggs scored 16 points and the visiting Panthers (8-9, 4-7) downed the Saxons (6-11, 1-10).

Mayson Younger led Ferris with 11 points.
