Pedestrian killed Friday night crossing 57th Avenue on upper South Hill

UPDATED: Sat., Jan. 26, 2019, 4:33 p.m.

A man was killed Friday evening when he was struck by an SUV while crossing a street on the upper South Hill.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the scene of the collision about 7 p.m. They found the man had been trying to cross 57th Avenue at Hailee Lane, in the Moran Prairie neighborhood, when he was struck by an eastbound SUV.

The victim was transported to an area hospital where was later pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s office said the driver, also an adult male, remained at the scene, cooperated with investigators and did not appear intoxicated. The sheriff’s office did not release the names of the driver or the pedestrian.

Investigators remained at the scene for several hours, while volunteers directed traffic. The sheriff’s office said anyone who witnessed the collision should call Cpl. Jeff Welton at (509) 477-3237.

The sheriff’s office also urged drivers to use caution when approaching emergency vehicles, obey traffic personnel and refrain from driving through or around traffic cones. One man was fined $124 for driving through the scene of the collision on 57th Avenue.

“This is not only extremely dangerous to everyone involved, but it also hampers the investigation and could destroy important evidence,” the sheriff’s office said.
