Sports letters: Baseball history class needed after reading ‘Indians A through Z’
Howie Stalwick should go back to baseball history class (Your Spokane Indians, A through Z, June 20).
“G” should be George Darby, who pitched a 15-0 perfect game for Class F Spokane, then the lowest rung of the minor league ladder, in 1898 (still a major and minor league record for most runs in a PG.) George Kelly would then replace Ian Kinsler at “K,” Clarence Coleman (added for his Choo Choo nickname) would be derailed at “C” and Stan Coveleski would replace him. Dave Stanton moves to “S,” and Glenn Dishman takes “D.” Besides having a great Spokane place-name, Dishman in 1993 retired 26 straight Yakima Bears only to have his first baseman commit a Bill Buckner-type error to spoil Spokane’s second perfecto. The aforementioned Buckner and teammate Bobby Valentine should occupy the “B” and “V” positions, since the latter belongs to a little-known fellow bus rider with Levi McCormack in 1946. Also, Howie should have noted Paul “P” Strand tossed a perfect game against his old Spokane team while with Seattle in 1917.
Howie, you flunked this exam and deserve a D-minus grade.
Dale Roloff,
Spokane
