Suspect arrested, charged for May fatal hit-and-run in Airway Heights

A suspect has been charged with felony hit-and-run for a May collision in Airway Heights that left 39-year-old Jackson Lawless dead, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said.

U.S. Marshals arrested Trevor J. Stephan, 24, in the West Central neighborhood and booked him into Spokane County Jail on Tuesday at about 4:40 p.m.

He appeared Wednesday in Spokane County Superior Court, and Court Commissioner John Stine set bail at $15,000.

Lawless was struck May 16 at about 9 p.m., when he was crossing Hayford Road outside a crosswalk near Northern Quest Resort and Casino, according to court documents. It was dark and raining at the time.

Surveillance footage showed the suspect briefly stopped at a nearby gas station, before continuing to drive south. Lawless was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff’s office investigators seized the vehicle, a silver 2010 Dodge Ram truck, allegedly driven by Stephan on May 18. A felony warrant for his arrest was issued on June 11.

Stephan pleaded guilty in April to an unrelated charge of conspiracy to possess a controlled substance with intent to deliver and was sentenced to serve one day in jail.
