Out of Right Field: Recap, takeaways from the Seattle Mariners’ 13-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels couldn’t have come up with a better tribute for Tyler Skaggs.

Right-handers Taylor Cole and Felix Pena combined for a no-hitter as the Angels defeated the Mariners 13-0 Friday night in their first home game since Skaggs, a left-handed pitcher, died July 1 in his Texas hotel room.

All of the Angels’ players wore Skaggs’ No. 45 for Friday’s game and after the victory placed their jerseys on the mound in tribute.

Mike Trout went 3 for 4 with two doubles, a home run and six RBIs. Four of those RBIs came in the first inning as the Angels batted around in scoring seven runs. Trout had a two-run homer and a two-run double in the inning.

Cole, used as the Angels’ opener, pitched the first two innings with two strikeouts. Pena went the final seven innings with one walk and six strikeouts.

The Mariners’ only baserunner came when Omar Narvaez walked with one out in the fifth inning.

Of note

Saturday would have been Skaggs’ 28th birthday. His mother, Debbie, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

By the numbers

4: Number of times the Mariners have been no-hit in franchise history. The Angels’ Mark Langston and Mike Witt combined for a no-no in 1990, the New York Yankees’ Dwight Gooden did so in 1996 and the Chicago White Sox’s Philip Humber pitched a perfect game against Seattle in 2012.

Things couldn’t have gone much worse for the M’s in the unofficial start to the second half of the season, as they also made three errors.

The teams are scheduled to play again at 6:07 p.m. Saturday, with the M’s using a reliever as an opener before left-hander Wade LeBlanc (5-2, 4.66 ERA) takes over. The Angels are set to start right-hander Matt Harvey (2-4, 7.50).
