Out of Right Field: Recap, takeaways from the Seattle Mariners’ 9-2 loss to the Oakland Athletics

Matt Chapman went 3 for 4 with a double, home run and five RBIs as the Oakland Athletics won their fifth consecutive game, defeating the visiting Seattle Mariners 9-2 Tuesday night.

Matt Olson also homered for the A’s and right-hander Daniel Mengden (5-1) pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on four hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Oakland improved to 8-2 this month.

The Mariners, who have lost five in a row, got their only runs on a pair of Omar Narvaez solo homers, in the second and ninth innings. Narvaez has 16 home runs this season.

Mariners left-hander Marco Gonzales (10-8), who had beaten the A’s in all three of his previous starts against them this season, including on Opening Day in Japan, was shelled for six runs on seven hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out three.

RHP Sam Tuivailala made his season debut in relief. Tuivailala had been out since suffering a ruptured right Achilles tendon last Aug. 8 at Texas, an injury that required surgery. … The M’s selected the contract of IF/OF Kristopher Negron from Triple-A Tacoma and also recalled RHP Erik Swanson, who was 1-5 with an 8.04 ERA over two previous stints in the majors this season. OF Mac Williamson, who hit .182 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in 25 games, was designated for assignment. Negron, acquired last September from Arizona, hit .310 with 12 homers and 61 RBIs with the Rainiers.
