Tim Beckham hit a grand slam as the Seattle Mariners won consecutive games for the first time in a month by defeating the visiting Detroit Tigers 7-2 Thursday night.

Kyle Seager also homered for the Mariners, who last won two in a row on June 25-26 at Milwaukee.

Left-hander Wade LeBlanc (6-3) pitched six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Right-hander Erik Swanson served as the opener for Seattle, throwing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

John Hicks homered for the Tigers, who lost their third in a row and are 2-11 since the All-Star break.

Tigers right-hander Drew VerHagen (1-1), making his first start of the season, went four innings and allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits. He walked four, struck out four and hit a batter with a pitch.

Of note

2B Tim Lopes, who made his major-league debut as a defensive replacement Wednesday, got his first start in the series opener. He walked and scored his first time up and was then hit in the left ear flap by a 91-mph Drew VerHagen fastball in the fourth inning. He stayed in the game, stole a base and scored again before being replaced in the seventh by Dylan Moore.

By the numbers

13: Number of times the M’s have scored 10 or more runs this season.

Our take from Right Field

With Mitch Haniger, Dee Gordon and Domingo Santana sidelined by injuries, Beckham might be the M’s best trade chip among position players at the July 31 deadline. He’s started at all four infield positions and in left field this season. The former No. 1 overall draft pick is batting .235 with 15 HRs and 44 RBIs.

Up next

The M’s continue their four-game series with the Detroit Tigers at 7:10 p.m. Friday at T-Mobile Park. LHP Yusei Kikuchi (4-7, 5.37 ERA) is scheduled to take on Tigers LHP Daniel Norris (2-8, 5.02).
