Youth Sports Notebook: Fields set for Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic tournaments

With the defending champions in the field, 64 teams – 32 in each the Senior and Junior divisions – are entered in the annual Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic for 17U and 18U boys baseball teams July 5-8.

Northwest Premier from Post Falls won the 2018 Senior title and The Crew from Spokane was the Junior champion.

Teams will play four or five pool play games, depending upon the number of teams in their pool, Friday and Saturday to determine seeding for bracket play.

Senior sites are Mt. Spokane, Gonzaga Prep, Al K. Jackson Field at Shadle Park, Lake City, Medical Lake and Thorco Field-Ramsay Park in Coeur d’Alene. Junior sites are Coeur d’Alene and Mead high schools, West Valley, Ferris, North Central and Hart Field.

The semifinals and finals will be July 8. Senior semifinals and finals will be at Al K. Jackson Field with the Junior semifinals and finals at Thorco Field-Ramsey Park. Semifinals are scheduled for 9 and 11 a.m. with the finals at 2 p.m.

• Pullman Patriots and Mt. Spokane Wild are tied for first place in the Spokane AAA league with 5-2 records with Shadle Park Shockers a half-game back at 5-3 in games reported through Wednesday.

Spokane Northstars are fourth at 3-5 followed by Spokane Bandits (1-3) and Spokane Cannons (1-5).

• Single A: West Kootenay has a 9-1 record to lead the American division with Newport a half-game back at 11-2 in games reported through Thursday.

Following are Prairie (7-2), Mt. Spokane (5-4), University (4-7), Gonzaga Prep (3-6), Central Valley (3-7), Shadle Park (2-9) and Indians A (1-7).

In the National division in games reported through Thursday, Whitman County (5-1) has a half-game lead over Moscow (7-2) and West Valley (6-3).

Following are Lewis and Clark (4-2), Northern Lakers (9-5), North Idaho Lakers Post 15 (3-3), Colville (4-7), Deer Park (4-7), Rogers (3-8) and Mead (1-8).

• AA: Colville (11-1-1) and North Idaho Lakers Post 15 (10-1) are in a tight battle atop the National standings in games reported through Tuesday.

Behind them are Deer Park (6-4), Kettle Falls (3-2), Ferris (8-6), Chewelah (5-5), Riverside (4-5-1), Medical Lake (6-8), Mead No. 2 (4-8), Cheney (3-9), Rogers (0-11).

There are too many results unreported in the AA American to accurately determine standings.
