Bailey Brkin’s career-high 50 saves lift Chiefs in Portland

PORTLAND – Bailey Brkin made 19 of his career-high 50 saves in the third period and five Chiefs scored Friday night as Spokane matched a season-high four-game winning streak, defeating the Portland Winterhawks 5-2 in a WHL game at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Jake McGrew’s 25th goal on the power play 6:04 into the first period got the Chiefs on the board. Luke Toporowski (19th) and Riley Woods (29th) struck in a 6:58 span of the second, and Jaret Anderson-Dolan (13th) and Eli Zummack (15th) added power-play goals in the third. It was Anderson-Dolan’s fourth goal in three games and extended Zummack’s season-high point streak to 16.

Spokane’s first win in Portland this season tied the season series 3-3. The Chiefs are 34-19-2-5, good for 77 points and third place in the U.S. Division. They trail second-place Portland by five points and lead fourth-place Tri-City by six.

Spokane closes out a four-game road trip at Tri-City on Saturday at 7:05.

  • The Chiefs announced the signing of defenseman Hendrik De Klerk to a WHL Standard Player Agreement. Spokane’s seventh-round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft had six goals and 31 assists this season for the Swift Current Legionnaires, with 10 multipoint games.
