College baseball: Whitman beats Whitworth; Zags’ game canceled

Whitman defeated Whitworth 6-4 on Sunday in the rubber game of their Northwest Conference series played at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.

The Blues (7-7 overall, 4-2 NWC) took a 6-0 lead after two innings and held off the Pirates (4-9, 1-2).

Nicholas Nerud doubled twice and drove in two runs to lead Whitworth’s comeback attempt.

Whitman scored five runs on only two hits in the first after pitcher Ryan Kingma (2-2) walked the first four batters.

Whitworth scored in the fourth when Nerud led off with a double and scored on Tyler Bailey’s two-out double. Nerud added a two-run double in the seventh.

Spencer Locati’s two-out single in the eighth drove in Taylor Poffenroth, getting the Bucs within 6-4. But closer Milo Mincin came on to get the Blues out of trouble and picked up his third save.

Whitworth relievers Mathew Pulliam, Tyson Yamane and Connor Grydtal combined to allow only one run and four hits in 7 2/3 innings.

Nerud finished 3 for 5. Casey Isa had two hits.

Gonzaga game canceled: The Bulldogs’ game against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, was called off in the fourth inning because of heavy rain and lightning in the area.
