From staff reports

For people who love to cook and write, Spark Central is serving up something special.

Kitchen Fires is a writing workshop and book project that will raise money for the nonprofit. Participants will bring a recipe or two as inspiration and work with local writers on the project.

The workshop will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. March 13 and 20. An optional session on March 27 will focus on workshopping the pieces and learning performance techniques.

The pieces will be published as an anthology and cookbook, to be released April 23 during the Get Lit Festival. The release party will feature Washington state poet laureate Claudia Castro Luna.

The workshop teachers will be:

Kate Lebo, author of “Pie School: Lessons in Fruit, Flour & Butter” and “A Commonplace Book of Pie,” as well as one of the driving forces behind the annual Pie and Whiskey literary event;

Megan Cuilla, a writer, eating disorder advocate and burgeoning foodie;

Laura Read, a former Spokane poet laureate who teaches English and creative writing at Spokane Falls Community College and is the author of the poetry collections “Dresses From the Old Country” and “Instructions for my Mother’s Funeral”; and

current Spokane poet laureate Mark Anderson, a performance poet and founder of Broken Mic.

The workshop costs $40. Participants must attend the first two sessions and the release party on April 23. For more information, visit https://spark-central.org/events/kitchen-fires.
