Women’s basketball: Mikayla Ferenz, Taylor Pierce help Idaho surge past Weber State

Mikayla Ferenz and Taylor Pierce scored 24 points apiece as Idaho closed on a 13-2 run to defeat Weber State 86-78 and earn at least a share of the Big Sky regular-season title on Thursday in Moscow, Idaho.
Gina Marxen and Isabelle Hadden added 10 points each for the Vandals (18-9, 15-3 Big Sky), who can clinch the outright crown with a win against Idaho State or a Northern Colorado loss at Northern Arizona on Saturday.
Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman poured in 37 points for the Wildcats (5-24, 2-17).
The Vandals shot 49.2 percent from the floor and 31 percent from 3-point range, and outrebounded Weber State 43-34.
Idaho’s regular-season finale against the Bengals will start at 2 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Gym.
Idaho State 74, Eastern Washington 45: Saylair Grandon scored 14 points as the Bengals used a stout defensive performance to top the Eagles in Cheney.
Estefania Ors (13 points) and Grace Kenyon (10) also finished in double figures for Idaho State (19-9, 14-5). Violet Kapri Morrow led the Eagles (10-18, 9-10) with eight points on 2-of-9 shooting from the field.
Idaho State shot 48.3 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from deep, while holding EWU to 31.4 percent overall and 25 percent from 3-point range.
The Eagles host Weber State for their Big Sky regular-season finale at 2:05 p.m. Saturday.
