Tim Beckham hit two of Seattle’s five home runs as the Mariners defeated the visiting Boston Red Sox 12-4 Thursday in their home opener. Teammates Edwin Encarnacion, Ryon Healy and Domingo Santana also went deep.

Of note

M’s left-hander Marco Gonzales (Gonzaga) improved to 2-0. He went 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits. He walked one and struck out four.

By the numbers

9: The number of combined RBIs in three games this season for Santana, who had four Thursday on a two-run double with the bases loaded and a two-run homer.

Our take from right field

Break up the “step-back” M’s, they’re 3-0. Who knows what to expect from the pitching staff, but this team will score some runs.

Beckham is finally showing why he was the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2008 by Tampa Bay. He went 5 for 7 in the two games in Japan and homered in his first two at-bats Thursday, both against Red Sox ace Chris Sale.

Up next

Red Sox RHP Nathan Eovaldi at M’s left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (0-0, 1.93 ERA), 7:10 p.m. Friday, T-Mobile Park.
