The Coeur d’Alene Police Department is investigating a report of a human bone discovered by a hiker on Tubbs Hill.

The hiker contacted police Thursday after finding what the hiker believed to be a human bone along a trail.

Coeur d’Alene police Capt. Dave Hagar said authorities are examining four specific areas along the trail and it will remain closed to the public Friday.

“Crews are going out this morning and will be digging a little deeper,” he said. “The trail has been developed since the 1980s, so this could be Native American remains. There’s no indication that it is something recent. It could be something historical.”

Investigators found two additional human bones Friday afternoon – which they believe are part of the same skeleton – while digging at the area.

The Coeur d’Alene Police Department is sending the human bones to a forensic anthropologist for further examination.
