College baseball: No. 3 Stanford opens Pac-12 series with win at Washington State

Will Matthiessen drove in four runs Friday to lead third-ranked Stanford past Washington State 7-1 to open a three-game Pac-12 Conference series at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Matthiessen finished 3 for 4, with an RBI single in the first inning, a two-run single in the seventh and a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Cardinal starter Brendan Beck, Austin Weiermiller (3-0) and Cody Jensen combined to strike out seven and walk one. In 4 1/3 innings, Beck allowed eight hits and one earned run, on Andres Alvarez’s RBI single in the third that cut Stanford’s lead to 2-1.

The Cardinal (16-3, 4-0) boosted their lead to 3-1 in the fifth on Duke Kinamon’s RBI single. Matthiessen’s single in the seventh made it 5-1.

Starter Brandon White (2-3) took the loss for the Cougars (6-18, 0-4), who had dropped 10 straight. White allowed four hits and one earned run in 4 1/3 innings.

San Diego 4, Gonzaga 2 (12): Stephen Dubb’s two-run double to left field in the 12th inning gave the Toreros (18-8, 4-3) a victory over the host Bulldogs (10-12, 3-4) to open a three-game West Coast Conference series at Patterson Baseball Complex.

The Zags tied the game with a two-run eighth, capped by Brett Harris’ RBI single to shortstop.

Five Toreros pitchers combined to check GU on five hits while striking out 13.
