Area baseball roundup: No. 2 Cardinal pound Cougars, complete 3-game sweep

Tim Tawa hit a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly and Kyle Stowers added a solo homer and an RBI double to power the second-ranked Stanford Cardinal to a 14-2 victory and a three-game sweep over Washington State in Pac-12 Conference play on Sunday in Pullman.

The Cardinal (18-3, 6-0 Pac-12) erased a 1-0 deficit in the third inning, scoring eight runs and ending the day for WSU starter Hayden Rosenkrantz (2-2), who allowed seven runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Dillon Plew had two hits, scoring a run for the Cougars (6-20, 0-6). Collin Montez singled in a run and stole his first base.

WSU, which has lost 12 straight games, hosts Gonzaga on Tuesday in a nonconference matchup before heading to Berkeley, California, for a three-game Pac-12 series against the Golden Bears beginning Friday.

Oregon State 4, Washington 3 (11): George Mendazona drilled a solo home run in the top of the 11th inning to lift the Beavers (19-5, 6-3 Pac-12) over the Huskies (14-9, 5-3), completing a three-game sweep in Pac-12 Conference action in Seattle.

Nick Kahle had an RBI single in the first inning and a two-run home run in the eighth to knot the score at 3-all.

Jake Mulholland (1-0) picked up the win for the Beavers, pitching three scoreless innings.

Stevie Emanuels was tagged with the loss, pitching five innings in relief of UW starter Josh Burgmann and allowing one run on three hits, five walks. Burgmann went the first six innings, surrendering three runs on three hits and five walks, striking out 13.

Pacific Lutheran 5, Whitworth 4: Jacob Bockelie belted a two-run home run and King Jimenez-Cruz added a two-run double to carry the Lutes (17-10, 9-6 NWC) past the visiting Pirates (14-11, 11-4), avoiding a Northwest Conference series sweep.

The Pirates trailed 5-1 entering the top of the ninth inning before staging a rally. Tyler Bailey led off with a double and scored on a wild pitch. Cody Simmons had an RBI double and Nicholas Nerud delivered a two-out run-scoring single to pull the Pirates within a run. Jaxsen Sweum singled before Ben Wintringer, who drove in the Whits’ first run with a two-out single, flied out to deep right field to end the game.

Whitworth returns home to host Puget Sound in a three-game NWC series at Merkel Field beginning Friday.
