Former Washington State quarterback Luke Falk claimed by New York Jets

PULLMAN – Luke Falk’s NFL journey will continue in the Big Apple.

One day after being released by the Miami Dolphins, the former Washington State quarterback was claimed off waivers by the New York Jets, ESPN’s Field Yates first reported Thursday afternoon.

Falk’s move to New York places him in a QB room with two other former Pac-12 signal-callers, ex-USC quarterback Sam Darnold – the Jets’ starter – and California’s Davis Webb.

Even if Falk is sitting behind both players on the Jets’ depth chart, he’ll have some bragging rights in the QB room, having defeated both while at WSU. Falk and the Cougars beat Sam Darnold and the fifth-ranked Trojans 30-27 in 2017 and beat Davis Webb and the Golden Bears 56-21 in 2016.

Trevor Siemian, the primary backup to Darnold, and former Troy standout Brandon Silvers, are the other quarterbacks on New York’s roster. If the Jets decide to move on from any of their five quarterbacks and carry four into training camp, it’s expected they’d move on from Silvers, who recently joined the team after a short stint in the now-defunct AAF.

Falk, who shattered a variety of school and conference records in four years as Mike Leach’s starter, joins his third AFC team in a year’s time since being chosen by the Tennessee Titans in the sixth round, with the 199th overall pick, of the 2018 NFL draft.

Falk will stay in the AFC East and reunite with Adam Gase, the head coach in Miami when the Dolphins claimed the former Cougars QB off waivers last September.

Gase was fired by Miami in December as part of the team’s organizational changes. He was announced as the Jets’ new head coach in January.

Falk may have had a better chance of staying on with the Dolphins had he not suffered a wrist injury in early October that demoted him from the active 53-man roster to the injured reserve.

After being drafted by the Titans, Falk appeared in four preseason games, completing 32 of 58 passes for 296 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Falk, 24, has yet to make his regular-season debut in the NFL. His addition to the Jets also means a reunion with former WSU teammate Frankie Luvu, an outside/Rush linebacker who earned a spot on New York’s 53-man roster after joining the team as an undrafted free agent.
