Out of Right Field: Recap, takeaways from the Mariners’ 5-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians

Carlos Santana hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Mariners 5-4 Saturday afternoon.

It was the sixth consecutive defeat for the Mariners, tying their season high.

All of Seattle’s runs came via solo homers. Daniel Vogelbach, Edwin Encarnacion, Dylan Moore and Tim Beckham went deep, with Beckham home run in the top of the eighth giving the M’s a short-lived 4-3 lead.

Francisco Lindor, who homered earlier, led off the bottom of the eighth with a single off M’s left-hander Roenis Elias. Leonys Martin put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Lindor to second before Jose Ramirez struck out.

The M’s then went to the bullpen, bringing in right-hander Connor Sadzeck (0-1) to face Santana. The move failed, as Santana hit a 2-1 pitch over the center-field wall to give the Indians the lead.

Of note

The M’s acquired RHP Austin Adams from the Washington Nationals in exchange for LHP Nick Wells, who was 1-2 with a 7.91 ERA in five starts for High-A Modesto. Adams will report to Triple-A Tacoma. He made one appearance in the major leagues this season. … IF Joey Curletta, the Mariners’ minor league hitter of the year last season, was claimed off waivers by the Boston Red Sox.

Our take from Right Field

The bullpen strikes again. Putting in Sadzeck to force the switch-hitting Santana to bat left-handed backfired, as he hit one over the center-field fence. A loss Sunday and the M’s slip to .500 (18-18) after their 13-2 start.
