Prep baseball: Dayton Wells pitches Mead past Chiawana in District 8 4A first-round matchup

Dayton Wells struck out six in a complete game and fourth-seeded Mead (13-8) beat visiting fifth-seeded Chiawana (9-10) 5-2 in a District 8 4A first-round game on Saturday.

Braeden Cordes drove in a pair of runs for Mead, which plays at top-seeded Richland in a semifinal on Tuesday. Riley Cissne homered for Chiawana, which hosts Gonzaga Prep on Tuesday in a loser-out.

Richland 11, Gonzaga Prep 1: Kirby Robertson went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and the Bombers (13-8) beat the visiting eighth-seeded Bullpups (11-10) in a first-round game. Taylor Johnson struck out seven across five innings for Richland.

Walla Walla 7, Central Valley 2: Casey Swanson went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two runs and the visiting Blue Devils (8-13) beat the Bears (18-3) in a first-round game. Heston Richmond drove in two for Walla Walla, which plays at Hanford in a semifinal on Tuesday. Matt Schwarz smacked a solo home run for CV, which hosts Ferris in a loser-out on Tuesday.

Hanford 7, Ferris 3: Luke Sutey hit a two-run double in a three-run sixth and the third-seeded Falcons (9-12) beat the visiting sixth-seeded Saxons (11-10) in a first-round game. Chase Stewart added a solo home run for Hanford. Ben Comes smacked a two-run homer for Ferris.

District 8 3A

Mt. Spokane 9, Southridge 1: Brady Hill went 4 for 4 with two runs, Stu Flesland tossed a complete-game four-hitter and the Wildcats (19-1) beat the visiting Suns (17-4) in a second-round matchup. Mt. Spokane advances to play Kamiakin (19-2) in the district title game on Tuesday.

Southridge 11, North Central 1: JJ Kukes went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and the Suns (17-3) beat the visiting Indians (3-18) at Mt. Spokane in the first round. The Indians (3-18) face a loser-out game at Kennewick on Tuesday.

Kennewick 5, Shadle Park 3: Kaleb Stevenson went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and the visiting Lions (13-8) beat the Highlanders (13-8) in the first round at LaPierre Field, Kennewick. Shadle Park plays in a loser-out at Southridge on Tuesday.

District 7 2A

Cheney 4, East Valley 1: Julian Chabot struck out eight over five innings and the Blackhawks (12-3) eliminated the visiting Knights (0-17) in a first-round game. Cheney hosts West Valley at Pullman in the district semifinal game on Tuesday.

West Valley 11, Clarkston 2: Hunter Tiffany and Bryan Andrews had two triples and three RBIs apiece and the Eagles (7-7) eliminated the visiting Bantams (8-7). Jacob Schmidt struck out seven over four innings for West Valley.

District 7 1A

Colville 18, Riverside 2: Jake Lindquist had two hits and five RBIs to lead the Indians (17-2) over the Rams (8-11) in a semifinal. John Knight pitched three innings and added two hits and four runs scored for Colville.

Colville plays Freeman for the district title, while Riverside plays Deer Park in the third-place game, on Tuesday at Avista Stadium.

Riverside beat Medical Lake 11-9 in a first-round game earlier in the day.

Freeman 7, Deer Park 6: Spencer Curnow hit a walk-off single and the Scotties (12-3) defeated the visiting Stags (15-6) in a semifinal. Jace Phelan was 2 for 3 hit a home run with five RBIs, two runs and a bases-clearing double in seventh. Phelan also pitched six innings with 11 strikeouts.

Deer Park 10, Lakeside (WA) 1: David Anderson allowed three hits with nine strikeouts and the Stags (13-5) beat the visiting Eagles (4-11) in a first-round game.

District 7 2B

Northwest Christian 13, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 1: Gunnar Kuehl struck out 13 over five innings and went 2 for 3 with a double, triple and four RBIs and the Crusaders (7-6) eliminated the visiting Broncos (8-11) in a second-round game. NWC plays in a district semifinal against Asotin game on May 11 at Medical Lake HS.

Chewelah 10, Davenport 0: Andrew Sweat struck out nine over five innings, Carl Oman went 3 for 4 with three runs and the Cougars (16-3) eliminated the visiting Gorillas (3-11) in a second round game. Chewelah advances to play Colfax in a semifinal.

Davenport eliminated Liberty (10-3) 9-6 in a first-round game earlier in the day as Aaron Davis went 2 for 4 with four RBIs.

Asotin 4, Kettle Falls 1: Devin Fry had 11 strikeouts and the Panthers (12-3) eliminated the visiting Bulldogs (8-8) in a second-round game.
