Out of Right Field: Recap, takeaways from the Mariners’ 10-1 win over the New York Yankees

Yusei Kikuchi allowed one run on three hits in 7 2/3 innings as the Mariners defeated the host New York Yankees 10-1 Wednesday night.

Ryon Healy went 4 for 5 with three doubles and a two-run homer for Seattle and Edwin Encarnacion and Mitch Haniger added solo shots.

After walking leadoff batter DJ LeMahieu in the bottom of the first, Kikuchi (2-1) retired 16 consecutive batters.

The Yankees’ first hit was a bloop double down the left-field line by No. 9 hitter Mike Tauchman with one out in the sixth inning. LeMahieu then hit a soft liner just out of the reach of second baseman Dee Gordon, sending Tauchman to third. A sacrifice fly by Luke Voit spoiled the shutout bid. The only other hit off Kikuchi was a two-out single in the eighth by Tauchman.

Yankees right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga (1-1) allowed four runs on six hits in four innings.

Of note

With four extra-base hits, Healy equaled teammate Haniger with 22 this season, tied for the American League lead. … Kikuchi’s quality start (six more more innings pitched with three or fewer runs allowed) was the 20th for the M’s this season, second in the majors to Houston (21).

Our take from Right Field

There’s no grander stage in the national pastime than Yankee Stadium, and Kikuchi’s debut there was outstanding. He even broke bats on the Yankees’ two hits in the sixth inning. After his scheduled one-inning start as part of his wellness plan, Kikuchi has allowed two runs on six hits in 14 2/3 innings over his past two appearances.
