Man killed when struck by vehicle in Airway Heights; driver at large

A man was killed Thursday evening when he was struck by a vehicle in Airway Heights.

The driver initially stopped, but then fled the scene, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Deputies were called to Hayford Road at Sprague just after 9 p.m. The pedestrian was crossing Hayford from east to west when he was struck by a southbound vehicle on Hayford.

The driver fled to the south.

The Sheriff’s Office is looking for information on two cars and the occupants: One car is a mid-2000s white Ford Crown Victoria that may have a spotlight on the driver’s side door. The car may have been at Northern Quest Casino at about 9 p.m., before the crash.

The other car is a dark sedan that was driven by a larger-built man with a female passenger. Both are in their 40s and are white or Hispanic. Before the crash, the two parked in the east lot of the casino and went inside for a few hours.

Anyone who witnessed this incident or can help identify the drivers is asked to call Corporal Jeff Welton at (509) 477-3237.
