Area roundup: Washington State men cruise ahead in 110-meter hurdles at NCAA West Regional

Washington State’s Nick Johnson, Sam Brixey and Christapherson Grant all moved ahead in the men’s 110-meter hurdles after Friday’s first round at the NCAA West Regional in Sacramento, California.

Johnson (13.83 seconds), Brixey (13.86) and Grant (14.03) will compete in Saturday’s quarterfinal round at Hornet Stadium.

WSU’s Zorana Grujic placed 27th in the women’s 3,000 steeplechase in 10:16.19. The Cougars’ Kyler Little placed 29th in the men’s 3,000 steeplechase in 8:59.71.

Also in the men’s steeplechase, Gonzaga’s Kellen Manley and Andrew Gardner (Mead) completed their collegiate careers. Manley placed 25th in 8:57.84 and Gardner was 47th in 9:32.23.

Eastern Washington junior Samantha Raines tied for 36th and senior Elizabeth Prouty tied for 42nd in the women’s pole vault. Raines cleared 12-10 1/4, Prouty 12-4 1/2.

John Dressel, a Colorado senior from Mt. Spokane, finished ninth in the 10,000 on Thursday in a personal-best 29:00.98 to qualify for nationals.

Dressel will run the 5,000 Saturday night. He’s a two-time All-American who missed the 2018 season with an injury.

• Whitworth’s Izzy Clark (Northwest Christian) placed fifth in the heptathlon and Nick McGill took sixth in the decathlon during the second day of the NCAA Division III Championships in Geneva, Ohio.

Clark totaled 4,815 points, seven off her career best. George Fox’s Annie Wright won with 5,101 points.

McGill finished with 6,727 points, boosted by the best mark in the field in the javelin (188-11). First-day leader Will Daniels of Central (Iowa) College held on to win with 7,427 points.

Marissa Mount will conclude Whitworth’s participation at the meet when she runs the 3,000 steeplechase Saturday. She enters with the third-fastest qualifying mark.

Baseball

Arizona 10, Washington State 4: Justin Wylie’s three-run homer to right-center in the sixth put the Wildcats (31-24, 14-14 Pac-12) ahead for good in a win over the host Cougars (11-41-1, 3-25-1) at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Dayton Dooney’s two-run single highlighted Arizona’s five-run ninth to break open a close game.

WSU took a 4-2 lead during a three-run fifth, ignited by Anthony Notaro’s solo homer.

The Cougars complete their season Saturday.

Tacoma 6, CC Spokane 2: Kenton Robillard’s two-run single during a three-run sixth snapped a 2-all tie and sent the Titans (41-8) past the Sasquatch (30-16) in a winner’s bracket game at the Northwest Athletic Conference Championship in Longview, Washington.

CCS tied the game 2-2 in its sixth on Justin Lutz’s two-run double.

Winner Josh Vitus allowed five hits and two earned runs in seven innings. Sasquatch starter Marcus Cain allowed nine hits and five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.

The Sasquatch will meet Mt. Hood at 11:05 a.m. Saturday in a loser-out game.
