Woman leads deputies on chase from Idaho to Mead; Spike strips, pepper spray and Taser used in arrest

After a car chase Friday night that started in Idaho and ended in Mead, Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies were forced to deploy spike strips to stop the fleeing car and arrest the driver.

The suspect, Colleen M. Burgess, 51, allegedly tried to hit two Idaho State Police cars in Kootenai County, which started the pursuit, according to a news release from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

Burgess allegedly sped toward Spokane County on Highway 290. Sheriff’s deputies picked up the pursuit around North Argonne Road near Bigelow Gulch.

Deputies deployed spike strips at North Bruce Road and East Peon Road, according to the news release, and were able to stop the car.

Burgess refused to obey commands and turned her music up extremely loud after the car came to a stop, according to the news release. After trying to get her out of the car for a lengthy period of time, deputies approached and deployed pepper spray through an open window.

Burgess reportedly then opened the door after about 5 minutes, but continued to ignore deputies’ commands, who then used a Taser before arresting her.

Burgess was taken to a hospital and later booked into Spokane County Jail. She is being charged with resisting arrest and attempting to elude a police vehicle. She is also likely to be charged in Idaho with two counts of aggravated assault and attempting to elude police.
