Man charged with raping woman as she slept outside near Division and Mission

A man is facing accusations that he raped a woman as she slept outside near the parking lot of a Division Street strip mall.

David P. Olienyk, 45, was charged Friday with second-degree rape after being arrested Thursday at about noon.

Spokane police say Olienyk raped the woman at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning while she was sleeping in an area concealed by bushes on the northwest corner of Division Street and Mission Avenue.

The woman reportedly woke up to Olienyk attacking her and screamed for help, records say. Olienyk zipped up his pants and ran westbound on Mission.

Olienyk reportedly admitted to the rape when questioned by police. Records say the defendant told officers he’d never met the woman before, but the two drank together earlier that morning.

He said eventually the victim left and walked away, but he later saw her sleeping. Records say he admitted to attacking her while she slept.

Olienyk has no criminal history in Spokane County.
