Area roundup: Ben College, Whitworth race past Trinity
Ben College sparked a decisive run in the first half, and he finished with 22 points to spur Whitworth’s 96-73 victory over Trinity in the Tip-off Classic men’s basketball tournament at the Whitworth Fieldhouse on Saturday.
College buried three 3-pointers in an 18-5 run that gave the Pirates (2-0) a 24-10 lead over the Texas program. Whitworth extended its advantage to 54-31 at halftime.
Garrett Paxton tossed in 14 points off the bench for Whitworth, and Isaiah Hernadez and Jordan Lester scored 13 and 12, respectively.
The Pirates host Cal Lutheran on Thursday at 7 p.m.
UC Riverside 58, Idaho 51: Callum McRae, a 7-foot-1 center, posted 21 points and 10 rebounds to lift the Highlanders past the Vandals in Riverside, California.
Trevon Allen led Idaho (1-1) with 18 points and seven rebounds, and BJ Simmons chipped in with 13 points. The Vandals led 26-22 at halftime but couldn’t maintain the lead.
Idaho plays UC Davis in the Red Wolves Classic in Jonesboro, Arkansas, on Thursday at 3 p.m.
