Greenstone to build mixed-use ‘flatiron’ building at Kendall Yards

Greenstone Homes is exploring if it can build a triangular “flatiron” building in downtown Spokane’s Kendall Yards, according to permit activity at the city.

The three-story building would be constructed at 1102 W. Summit Parkway at the corner of Summit Parkway and Jefferson Lane in a vacant dirt patch abutting the My Fresh Basked parking lot and in the shadow of the Spokane Regional Health District building.

According to documents filed with the city, the mixed-use building would have ground-floor retail space and contain a total of eight apartments with high ceilings and interior mezzanines on the upper two levels. The Summit-facing facade would be brick.

The term “flatiron,” which is used in Greenstone’s documents, refers to the Flatiron Building in New York City. It sits on the triangular block formed by Fifth Avenue, Broadway and East 22nd Street.

At the same time, Greenstone is considering building a five-story mixed-use building at 1108 W. Summit Parkway, just west of the proposed flatiron. The mixed-use building would have ground-floor space for retail or restaurant purposes, with the remaining floors reserved for apartments. This building would stand in front of the Providence and Kaiser Permanente medical building.

The flatiron building is being designed by Greenstone and Shoesmith Cox Architects, of Seattle. The other building is designed by Bernardo|Wills Architects of Spokane.

Both plans are in predevelopment conference stages with the city.
