A fire destroyed a Spokane Valley apartment unit and damaged another Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire at the Cedar Chateau Estates apartment complex at about 12:30 p.m., according to Julie Happy, a Spokane Valley Fire Department spokeswoman.

The fire caused minimal smoke, but flames could be seen coming from the top floor of the apartment complex, Happy said. Firefighters knocked down the blaze within a few minutes and wrapped up their response in about 15 minutes.

“They hit it really hard to get it done,” Happy said.

The residents of the damaged apartment units were evacuated and investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire as of 3 p.m. Thursday, according to Happy.
