Cataldo students missed out
Anne McClain is an inspiration. Educated in Spokane schools, she fulfilled her dream of becoming an astronaut.
She returned this week to be honored as a YWCA Woman of Achievement and share her journey with local students. Anne McClain was raised here in a loving family that stands up for social justice. As a proud graduate of St. Augustine’s (now Cataldo) School, I was saddened to read that students at Cataldo and other Catholic elementary schools were prevented from attending her presentation at Gonzaga Prep unless parents checked their child out of school and provided transportation. The reason?
“Some parents paying tuition might want their children in school.” I suspect that students at Cataldo participate in several educational field trips every year.
When asked if the decision was related to McClain’s sexual orientation, the response was “no comment.” At my recent 50th high school reunion from Holy Names Academy, we joyfully hugged and celebrated. No one asked about my sexual orientation.
These students were robbed of the opportunity to meet this remarkable woman. We should be proud and shout to the heavens that Americans like McClain use their talents to serve our country, especially at this divisive time.
