Sacajawea Middle School went into a brief lockdown as school was let out for the day Tuesday, and a student was arrested several blocks away with a BB gun.

Spokane police received a call from a family member that a student may have had a gun in their backpack at the school, according to Sgt. Terry Preuninger, a police spokesman. Officers contacted the student off school grounds just before 3 p.m.

The school went into a lockdown “out of an abundance of caution for student and staff safety,” said Brian Coddington, a Spokane Public Schools spokesman. The district later informed families about the lockdown.

The district is in contact with the police for further investigation of the incident, according to Coddington.
