Clearwater Paper reports earnings loss for third quarter

Spokane-based Clearwater Paper Co. reported a net loss in earnings during the third quarter.

The company reported earnings of $11 million, or 66 cents per share, for the quarter compared to net earnings of $34.4 million, or $2.08 per share, in the third quarter 2018, according to a company statement.

The company attributed the decrease in net earnings to planned major maintenance at its mill in Lewiston, Idaho, higher input costs for pulp and wood fiber as well as higher depreciation and interest expenses.

Clearwater Paper indicated its new facility in Shelby, North Carolina, is meeting customer quality expectations and targeted production volume. The company reported strong paperboard and pulp production, and an 8% increase in year-over-year tissue sales.
