School vote important for all

I recently had the privilege of attending an event for Katey Treloar, candidate for the Spokane School Board - Position 1. I found her to be well spoken and knowledgeable about the current issues facing the school board and some potential common-sense solutions for the biggest problems.

These are things that one would want from a candidate running for office, but what I was surprised by was Katey’s extensive knowledge of important statistics about the school district and the city. Did you know that District 81 is the second-largest school district in the state and that it is one of the top five employers in Spokane? How about the fact that the school budget is half a billion dollars and rivals that of the city?

Katey has these numbers at the ready as she spoke and answered questions from the group. She made us realize that voting next month for the three vacant school board positions is important to all of us in Spokane, whether they have school-age children or not. Not only does a successful education system prepare our children for their lives now and in the future, but it also affects our current job market and economy.

Please take the time to visit the websites of those running for the Spokane School Board and cast your vote on Nov. 5. It’s important to our whole community.
