Unions helped build us

I was taken aback by the comments of Nadine Woodward at the Pints and Politics forum Tuesday evening, where she said Ben Stuckart was “bought and paid for by the unions” and beholden to “union bosses.”

I prefer, and would encourage, people to use the term business manager, union leader or worker advocate. My job as a union representative is to promote industrial peace and develop a more harmonious relationship between employees and employers. We strive for effective programs which would improve, advance and increase the opportunities for employment for all working people.

The men and women of unions are your mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, neighbors and friends. We build your infrastructure, maintain your roads, build your schools, teach your children, care for your sick and pay taxes. We stimulate the economy in which we live. We have and always will be at the center of every great community striving for livable wages, health benefits, pensions, equal rights, safe working conditions and ensuring that all working people have the right to be represented and treated fairly.

I am honored to represent the hardworking men and women of LiUNA Local #238 in Spokane. The partnership between our members and responsible union contractors has helped create what Spokane is today: a wonderful place to live and raise a family. We are and always will be proud of who we are and proud of our contributions to this country and this city.

Scot Holstrom, business manager

Laborers Local 238
