EVERETT – Justin Lies scored a goal with 1:08 left in regulation and Tanner Brown scored the game-winner in the sixth round of a shootout to lift the Vancouver Giants to a 2-1 victory over the Spokane Chiefs in Western Hockey League preseason play on Sunday.
The goaltending was stellar for both teams, with Spokane’s Filip Kral scoring the first goal of the game with 12:10 remaining in the third period on a 5-on-3 power play. Bear Hughes and Luke Toporowski picked up assists on the goal.
Campbell Arnold, a 17-year-old, started in goal for the Chiefs and stopped all 15 shots he faced in 33:07 of action. Mason Beaupit, a 15-year-old, took over for Arnold and stopped 22 of 23 shots while playing 31:53.
Vancouver goalie David Tendeck went the distance and turned back 25 of 26 shots.
The Chiefs’ preseason continues Friday at 3 p.m. as they take on the Portland Winterhawks at the Toyota Center in Kennewick, Washington.
Veterans Jake McGrew, Eli Zummack, Noah King, and Matt Leduc were scratches for the Chiefs.
