A man stole a kayak and attempted to evade Spokane County sheriff’s deputies after trying to burglarize a garage in Newman Lake on Tuesday morning, according to Deputy Mark Gregory.
“We received a call about a suspicious male and that he was kind of lurking around some property,” Gregory said.
The man entered a nearby garage. When deputies arrived, the man allegedly stole a kayak from a nearby dock and paddled out onto Newman Lake. The man then got out of the kayak and swam to a swampy area of the shore, Gregory said.
Deputies set up a perimeter and launched Air 1 helicopter because it was unknown if the suspect was armed.
The suspect was spotted from the air and deputies on the ground approached. Initially, he was cooperative, but when deputies attempted to handcuff him, he resisted , Gregory said.
A stun gun was used but was ineffective, Gregory said. A K-9 was then deployed, and the suspect was taken into custody.
He was booked into Spokane County Jail on charges of burglary, theft and resisting arrest but refused to give deputies his name, Gregory said.
