Driver has accident due to medical event during protest outside Kootenai Health

Coeur d'Alene-based Kooenai Health has owned Kootenai Heart Clinics since 2012. Kootenai Health CEO Jon Ness says the planned closures of three Kootenai Heart Clinics in Spokane stem from an inability “to overcome ... financial challenges.” (Kathy Plonka / The Spokesman-Review)

An elderly driver had a medical episode while driving a car in the Kootenai Health parking lot Wednesday night and hit a pole, according to Coeur d’Alene police Capt. Dave Hager.

The accident occurred during a planned protest at the hospital but the events were unrelated, Kootenai Health spokesperson Kim Anderson said.

The driver was removed from the car by hospital security and treated for his injuries.

Police and emergency medical services were called, but Kootenai Health staff dealt with the incident internally.
