A 22-year-old Rathdrum woman was arrested Thursday on suspicion she killed her newborn baby.

A woman transported Elizabeth B. Keyes and her deceased baby to Kootenai Health on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.

Kootenai County Sheriff’s detectives determined at the scene the baby may have been alive at birth and that Keyes was responsible for the child’s death, according to a news release.

After investigators collected evidence from the hospital and Keyes’ residence, conducted interviews and examined autopsy results, a judge granted an arrest warrant for Keyes, a news release said.

Keyes was booked into the Kootenai County Jail Thursday night on suspicion of first-degree murder, according to jail records. Her bond was set at $1 million.
