Rockwood South Hill retirement community reports 12 positive COVID-19 cases

UPDATED: Sun., Aug. 2, 2020

Seven residents and five workers at the Rockwood South Hill assisted living facility tested positive last week for the novel coronavirus, the provider said Sunday.

In a post on its website, Rockwood said the infections were discovered after testing on Wednesday. One resident “already suffering from significant underlying conditions” died Friday after testing positive, according to the notice published online and sent to residents and family members this weekend.

The cases are confined to the facility’s assisted living and skilled nursing areas. Workers that tested positive have been ordered to stay home for 14 days.

Residents who tested positive were confined to the Atrium area of the campus, and have been moved to an isolated area of the facility and are being treated by staff members assigned exclusively to the COVID-19 patients, Rockwood said. Officials there are working closely with the Spokane Regional Health District in an effort to reduce spread, including requiring all healthcare workers to quarantine and wear full personal protective equipment when working with residents.

No positive tests came back for residents in the Suites or Courtyard area of the facility off 25th Avenue, according to the notification. The Hawthorne campus has also not seen any positive cases of COVID-19 to date.

Meals are being delivered to rooms and all group activities have been cancelled, according to the notice. Visitors are being restricted until further notice.

Another round of testing for all healthcare staff and residents is planned for later this week.

Last week, 32 cases of the virus were reported at the Royal Park Health and Rehabilitation in the Nevada Heights neighborhood. At the time, the Spokane Regional Health District reported 11 assisted living facilities with cases in Spokane County.
