Man hit by car Saturday night by people “cruising” Monroe Street

One man was left with life-threatening injuries Saturday after being hit by an intoxicated driver “cruising” Monroe Street, according to Spokane police.

Police were dispatched to Monroe Street and Carlisle Avenue where a car struck a man just before 9 p.m. When officers arrived, about 100 people were standing in the road and on sidewalks, according to a Spokane police news release . Some people were fighting while a few seemed to be helping a man lying in the northbound lanes of Monroe, police said.

As more officers arrived, the injured man received medical attention. The bystanders fighting complied with police and moved out of the road, police said.

The injured man was taken to a local hospital and police began interviewing members of the crowd. According to police, a group of people gathered in a nearby parking lot after “cruising” Monroe Street.

At some point, a car hit the man and a fight followed between the driver of the car, Jack Young, 32, and the man who was hit, as well as pedestrians Abby Wade, 35, and Gregory Parke, 39. Other fights subsequently broke out.

Police determined Young was intoxicated while driving, and he was booked into jail on a charge of vehicular assault. Parke was charged with fourth-degree assault and disorderly conduct. Wade was charged with disorderly conduct and as a pedestrian in a roadway.

The investigation is ongoing and charges could be modified, police said.
