Spokane Valley firefighters extinguish car, vape pen-sparked fires Wednesday

Flames are seen billowing from a fire in the 2300 block of North Argonne Street on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020.   (Spokane Valley Fire Department)

Spokane Valley firefighters extinguished a pair of car fires and a structure fire believed to be started by a vape pen Wednesday afternoon.

All three events were reported during the 4 p.m. hour, according to a news release. The structure fire involved units from the Spokane Valley and Spokane fire departments, as well as Spokane County Fire Districts 8 and 9.

The fire in the 10900 block of East 23rd Avenue was quickly put out. Investigators determined the fire was caused by a charging vape pen left under some bedding that ignited.

One car fire was discovered after a motorist pulled over in the 2300 block of North Argonne Street when smoke began billowing from underneath the vehicle’s hood. Valley Fire Engine 12 extinguished the flames.
