A house fire Wednesday afternoon just off East Trent Avenue in Spokane Valley displaced seven people.

Firefighters were called around 2:45 p.m. upon reports of a fire at 4216 N. Best Road next to Cabinet Systems, said Julie Happy, community affairs manager for the Spokane Valley Fire Department. Happy said fire crews arrived to flames reaching approximately 30 feet in the air.

“My battalion chief came across Sullivan (Road) and saw a big column of smoke, so he upgraded the fire,” Happy said of the initial response.

As of 6 p.m. Wednesday, crews were still on scene working to extinguish the fire. A cause is still under investigation, Happy said.

Seven people were evacuated from the residence. Happy said the residents will be displaced due to the extent of the damage, including a collapsed roof.

“Inside, they have a lot of possessions,” Happy said, “so it’s kind of made it a little difficult to really get in there and fight the fire.”

The Spokane Valley Fire Department called in 10 engines and two ladder trucks to the scene – nearly the department’s whole fleet, Happy said. Additionally, crews from the Spokane Fire Department and Spokane County Fire District 8 were called in for mutual aid, Happy said.
